Seneca Quotes IV

Old age, death, health, well being

No one is so old that it would be wrong for him to hope for another day to dawn.

To love, while useful to a young man is indecorous to an old man.

There are people who torment themselves over the memories of past things; others afflict themselves with the evils to come. It is all absurd, for what has already happened does not affect us and the future does not yet touch us… We should count each day as a separate life.

Woe to he who frets over the future!

There is nothing more despicable than an old man who has no other proof than his age to offer of his having lived long in the world.

It is not a question of an early or late death, but a good death. A good death means to escape the risk of dying in illness.

He who depends on the future is lost in the present.

As long as we put things off, life goes by.

While we postpone, life speeds by.

If what the wise men tell us is indeed true and if a place that receives us after death does exist, maybe the friend who we believe to be defunct has only just preceded us.

Some cease to live before beginning to live. This is the only reason for which we cannot complain of life: it does not hold anyone back.

As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.

The important thing is not to live long, but to live well; and often times those who live well do not live long.

We die each day, each day a part of life goes by.

In this we are wrong: to see death ahead of us, as a future event, because a great part of it is behind us. Every hour of our past belongs to death.

After death there is nothing and death is also nothing.

When old age comes, accept it, love it. It is bounding in delights if you know how to love it. The years that gradually decline are among the sweetest of a man’s life. Even when you have reached the far limits of your years, they still hold great pleasures.

Make haste to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.

The wish for healing has always been half of health.
